Experimental investigation on the Electrohydrodynamic motion and Shape Deformation of a sedimenting Drop under Uniform Alternating Electric Field

چکیده
A leaky dielectric Newtonian drop suspended in another leaky dielectric Newtonian liquid medium deforms as it settles under the influence of a uniform alternating electric field. As a result of this deformation, the terminal velocity is affected. In this study we present a detailed experimental investigation of the effect of horizontally directed uniform alternating electric field on the settling velocity and deformation characteristics of silicone oil drop falling in castor oil medium. For the fluid pair used, the drop deforms to a prolate shape on application of electric field which retards the drop motion in the vertical direction. There is a marked decrease in drop velocity with increase in field strength of the alternating electric field.

متن کاملElectrohydrodynamics and electrorotation of a drop with fluid less conductive than that of the ambient fluid
In this article, we investigated the electrohydrodynamic responses of a deformable fluid drop in another immiscible fluid under the action of a dc electric field. Both the ambient and drop fluids considered here were incompressible Newtonian and all of the drop phases were less conductive than their ambient fluids. Under these circumstances, the drops experienced the so-called electrorotation o...
متن کاملElectrohydrodynamic model of vesicle deformation in alternating electric fields.
We develop an analytical theory to explain the experimentally observed morphological transitions of quasispherical giant vesicles induced by alternating electric fields. The model treats the inner and suspending media as lossy dielectrics, and the membrane as an impermeable flexible incompressible-fluid sheet. The vesicle shape is obtained by balancing electric, hydrodynamic, bending, and tensi...

Industrial demands for more compact heat exchangers are a motivation to find new technology features. Electrohydrodynamics (EHD) is introduced as a promising phenomenon for heat transfer enhancement mechanisms. Similar to any new technology, EHD has not been understood completely yet and requires more fundamental studies. In boiling phase change phenomena, nucleation is the dominant mechanism i...
متن کاملStudy of leaky dielectric droplet behavior under an electric field: effect of viscosity and electric conductivity ratios
In this research, hydrodynamic behavior of a leaky dielectric droplet under an electric field is simulated. The level set method is used for interface tracking and the ghost fluid method is used for modeling discontinuous quantities at interface. Using Taylor’s leaky dielectric model, electric field and electric force at the interface is calculated. Simulation results show the droplet deformati...
